Aisha was looking for her school documents. She had always kept her certificates in her father’s room. Years ago, he insisted,
“Important things should stay where they can be found.”
So every transcript and certificate ended up in his drawer.
Now she needed them again. She had finally decided to start her MBA application. As she sorted through his neatly arranged papers — clipped, dated, and in order — she noticed an envelope with her name on it. She opened it.
“My dear girl,
If you’re reading this, it means you’re finally going through these papers. I’ve told you before, important things should never be scattered.”
She smiled. The letter sounded exactly like him. He asked about work and reminded her not to rush life because others seemed ahead.
Then she read:
“Anything worth doing is worth doing properly. Understand the process. Follow it. Keep things in order.”
He had said that all her life — when she applied to university, when she searched for her first job. “Process protects you,” he would say.
She continued reading.
“There are things that will require patience one day. When that time comes, don’t rush. Follow the right steps. Let things be handled properly.”
After he passed, there had been meetings, documents, and procedures. Nothing dramatic — just forms to file, steps to follow, and time to allow. Those steps made everything clear — what belonged to whom and what was hers.
Months later, as she reviewed her MBA requirements, she looked at the tenancy statements from one of the houses her father left behind. Part of that rent was hers, enough to fund her MBA, because the proper process had been followed. For the first time, she fully understood what he meant. Process protects you. Love doesn’t end at intention; it continues through structure.
When someone passes away, accessing what they left behind is not automatic. Probate is the legal process that authorises a person to secure the assets the deceased has left behind. This includes property, money, shares, and other assets through the procurement of letters of administration or a grant of probate issued by the court. It ensures that what was left is transferred lawfully and in accordance with the right procedures.
Meristem Probate Services helps guide loved ones through this process, so what was intentionally left behind is accessed with order and care.
This Valentine’s season, honour love by handling what it left behind properly.
