The following weekend, the family gathered once again, this time for a more formal meeting with Lucas. The discussion about family governance continued, and this time they were digging deeper into the details.
Sophia, always practical, asked, “Isn’t family governance mainly about money, though?”
Justina shook her head. “No, it’s much more than that. Family governance is about keeping the family connected, defining and practising your values, and ensuring everyone’s growth is intentional and aligned with your legacy.”
Frank, still thinking through the details, chimed in, “How often should we review this plan? Is it something we set up once and forget about?”
“It’s an ongoing process,” Lucas explained. “It’s good practice to review your family governance plan annually, or whenever there’s a major change in the family or its wealth. That way, it stays relevant.”
Jane, always eager to learn, asked, “Is this legally binding, or just something we agree to follow?”
“It can be legally binding, depending on how it’s structured,” Lucas replied. “Some families choose to make parts of the governance enforceable, while others rely on mutual understanding and commitment.”
As the discussion continued, Donald looked around at his family, appreciating the seriousness with which they were all engaging in the process. “This is exactly what we need,” he said, nodding.
“We should probably set a date to officially begin drafting our family constitution,” Lucas suggested. “It’s the next crucial step.”
Bianca, always organised, proposed, “Why don’t we meet next Saturday? Everyone can make sure they’re available.”
Frank agreed, “I’ll clear my schedule. This is too important to miss.”
Before the family concluded, Lucas turned to Henry, handing him a card. “For your friends, if they ever want to start this process themselves, they can reach us at [email protected].”
Henry took the card with a grin, “I’ll spread the word.”
With the date set, the Atunwa family felt a renewed sense of unity. The journey toward securing their legacy, not just in wealth but in values, was now well on its way. Everyone was on board, ready for the next chapter.
